A great weekend for Charlie Hatton at the Finals round of this year’s National Series with our Atherton Academy rider Luke Williamson also blowing away the competition in the 15-16 year old boys category, Charlie took the Round 5 win by 6.66 seconds and clinched the Overall Series title.
When the riders arrived at Bringewood on Saturday morning it was already very wet! Mechanic Marek on support duties this weekend said – “Bringewood is a great track, steady gradient, not hugely technical and loamy – at least usually – this weekend it was just muddy!”
The first section was especially difficult with most riders struggling to stay on their bikes, practise was so chaotic with such a high number of crashes that there was talk of taking out the top section altogether – but it stayed!
Luke was first up for seeding and he absolutely lit up the track – his seeding time of 2:37.346 was second only to Adam Brayton’s 2.37.17 in the Elite men.
Charlie crashed out a the first corner he said “ I slid out with everybody watching! All the Elite boys I just laughed with them and got back on but my hands were slippery on the grips and I just rolled down really – I was way back – 12 seconds maybe but I thought with a good run this could be on…”
Come Finals the weather was clearing slightly but constant rain showers ensured that conditions stayed lethal.
Luke went down, losing time on his seeding run but he was still well clear of the rest of the field, taking the top spot not only for today but the entire Series.
Charlie said “ The ruts at the top were ankle deep, Savage! I thought that if I could get through the top good then its done! The mud was so thick that you had to pedal the whole way down, it was the most physical thing ever! This was probably the wettest race of my life and that time in the hotseat was a very nervous wait!
But nobody could get close to Charlie – top seed Adam Brayton crossed into second 3.98 back in the closing run of the DH season.
Charlie said “ It’s been a tough season for sure but it’s so good to finish on a high with 3rd at Hardline last week and the win today I’m heading into the off-season with a lot more confidence”
