Qualification wins for Rachel and Kade! Race Report: Round 1 Losinj, Qualifications

21st April 2018

another hot, dusty day in Croatia with the track getting increasingly wild as the day went on.

First up was Atherton Academy’s Mille Johnset, riding her first ever race in the Junior Women’s World Cup. With just nine riders in the field it was a seeding race rather than qualification.

Despite several mistakes Mille handled the situation with a cool head, bringing her bike back from the edge of a crash three times in the lower sections of her run. Mille said “It wasn’t a good run, hopefully better tomorrow! I had a perfect start with the jumps but after that it was pretty bad so…”

In the Junior Men’s race our Kade Edwards headed out with the number one plate for the first time in his World Cup career. This is Kade’s second year of juniors but any hopes that he might have things relatively easy this year were soon dispelled, he took the Quals win but times were tight with Thibault Daprela just 0.8 behind him and the top 5 riders all within 5 seconds. Kade said “Kept it rubber side down and had a solid run, got loose and got stoked!!”

In the Men’s race neither Gee nor Charlie had protected rider status which influenced both of their runs today. Both riders elected to take it fairly steady but neither were particularly pleased with their runs. Charlie said “ it was scrappy, not as smooth as I’d have liked.” Gee said “The track here is brutal, taking no prisonersI made some small mistakes which cost a lot of time, there plenty more line choices yet to be tried and some time to make tomorrow”
