The National Series ventured down to South Wales for the first found of the 2018 season.Cwmcarn is a fun track, fast, twisty up top with some big jumps at the bottom, a great spot for the season opener with some super tight racing!
Saturday’s timed practice was super wet after morning downpours but underneath the track was hard pack and super-fast!
The riders were loving the first race of the season with the Men’s Elite especially putting in some very competitive timed runs. It became clear that times would be tight this weekend with very little to separate the riders.
After 5 runs the Trek Factory Racing team reigned supreme with Charlie leading on 2.37.039 and Gee in 2nd 2.37.339, A sixth run changed things up with Mike Jones posting the day’s fastest 2.35.258, Gee was lying 2nd on 2.36..19 and Charlie was ranked 4th ( to Danny Hart) with 2.37.039.
In the Women’s field Rachel looked streets ahead with a best timed run of 2.59.406 with Becci Skelton in 2nd with 3.24.465, however there were fast girls like Tahnee Seagrave, Abbie Sloan and Aston Tutt who looked like they hadn’t put in a complete , non-stop run so nothing could be taken for granted.
Rachel said “It was flat out – a little bit of mud on track but wicked fun”
In the Juniors, Morgan Tyrell was looking fast with 2.46.449, Kade didn’t put in a full run so there was little indication of how Finals would pan out.
With Sunday came drier weather and Seeding runs, Kade seeded 1st, while Atherton Academy youngster Luke Williamson placed 2nd. In the Men’s Charlie seeded 6th and Gee 7th. In the Women’s seeding both Rahel and Tahnee had their runs disrupted by red flags. Both delined re-runs so they started in the same order as their seeding position.
The track had dried out a lot,Luke put in a super fast run of 2.39.00 but he was pipped to the in by a super fast run from Irish youth Chris Cummings.
The day was plagued by red flags so plenty of delays to get nervous! In the Juniors the team held their breath as Kade headed out to the start gate. He’d only been back on the big bike for a week after injuring his hand and hadn’t put in a full timed run. They needn’t have worried!
Kade said “ Today was sick and so good to take the first win of the season, the jumps here are rad!”
In the women’ s race Rachel started the season as she means to go on – first by 2.8 seconds which on a track with tight racing was a sizeable margin over 2nd placed Tahnee Seagrave.
The mens race was a matter of tenths! Ge placing a solid 6th just half a second off 3rd spot with Chalie a further half a second back in 7th.
Strong performances from everyone bodes well for the opening World Cup in 2 weeks time as the Series hits Croatia for the first time.
