Qualifying Report: UCI World Cup 2017 Round 5: Lenzerheide.

7th July 2017

Lenzerheide qualification was “fast and loose” today, so much so that not all riders got down in one piece. Gee and Rach are both still rehabbing from dislocations and are riding with a lot of pain so Gee’s 37th place qualification today was beyond expectation – and as for Rachel’s first…! Muddy likes the Lenzerheide track and that fondness was rewarded to day with a solid 30th place – a big relief after he struggled with the top rocks yesterday.

A couple of big course holds meant that Kade was at the top of the hill for a long time today. Finn Iles was first off but second ranked Junior Matt Walker wasn’t able to race after a big crash yesterday so Kade was on course next. There were some tense moments in the pits as the team on the hill radioed down that Kade had also taken a tumble.

He was lucky, just some cuts to his arms, but there were some anxious moments as the team waited to hear if he’d done enough to qualify (Top 20 go through in the Junior Men). In the end it was fine – 15th place with plenty of motivation for tomorrow.

Kade said “ My run was OK except I crashed when I overcooked it at the top. I can’t wait t o shred tomorrow, just need to stay on my bike!”

Next up were the Women. And Rach was on an absolute stormer! All thoughts of a painful shoulder were out of the window as she stormed down the hill to take the win in 3.33.08 , clear of Myriam Nicole by 0.8 secs

Rach said “ I think we all blew our minds out there this afternoon, fastest in qualifying was a total surprise today! Massive thanks to Fox and to Joe for getting my bike dialed.”

Then the Men were up, Aaron Gwin ( who has never wn her) qualified first, 2 seconds clear of Vallnord’s winner Troy Brosnan. Muddy had a great run to qualify in 33rd place and Gee was 41st  despite a lot of pain from his hip. Gee said “ I’m stoked with that – gonna have to get back on the GameReady now though!!”
