16 year old Martin Maes triumphed again this weekend at Round 2 of the Easyphone Cup Mountainbike Enduro, held in Ovifat taking his season’s tally to 3 wins out of 3 outings.

170 riders from Belgium, France, Holland and Germany had great fun on the amazing trails at Ovifat – an area of magnificent Belgian forest. Only 5 out of 6 stages were completed due to a severe crash on the mass start stage which caused a delay to proceedings while the track and stage restarted. but there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day with a massive feeling of enthusiasm for the sport, for the opportunity for families to ride together (10 year olds tackled the same challenging stages as the adult riders) and for the event itself, part of the Easyphone series organized by Martin’s father Patric Maes – himself 23 times Belgian National Champion. The event didn’t include a practice day but it did have an uplift on Belgium’s only ski-lift!

After Stage 3 Martin sat in 2nd place – 2 seconds back from eventual runner up Daniel Prikjel but in the mass start stage he kept out of trouble and pushed hard, then again in the 5th to take the overall win by 4.5 seconds.

This weekend Martin was supported for the first time by GT Factory racing’s new Enduro team mechanic Matteo Nati who played such an important role in Dan Atherton’s last season win at Finale Ligure.

Martin said “ I’m really happy for the win – I was tired from last weekend’s race and I made a few mistakes – especially on the first stages but in the last 2 stages I managed to push harder to take back the time. It was great to work with Matteo, he’s a good man, I know that we are going to have a great season.

Matteo said “ It was really good to start working with Martin, He is so calm and confident – it’s amazing to see in someone who is only 16 years old. He has a great attitude and I know that he’s going to learn a lot from Dan this season and that we are going to build a great team. “
