Gee Atherton Red Bull Foxhunt

27th November 2012

This weekend saw the second Red Bull Foxhunt in Belfast’s iconic Cave Hill Country Park, where Gee Atherton played the fox – only in contrast to the traditional country pursuit he was not running from the hunters but chasing them down.
The pack gathered at Napoleon’s Nose, the highest point of Cavehill and were given a ten second head start.

Their objective was to get down the 5.3km trail, through moorland, forest and some serious mud to reach the grounds of Belfast Castle before Gee raced past them to eliminate them from the race.
Gee said “This course is perfect for an event like Foxhunt – it’s got such a great mix of elements, fast Downhill, a lot of long climbs and pedaling sections – there’s enough to challenge all types of riders and to allow different standards of rider to get together and have a lot of fun.

Thousands of spectators watched with bated breath as Gee forced his way through 100s of riders to force a sprint finish and a lung-searing battle for the line.
Gee said “There were some great riders out there today, it was such fun to ride, total carnage in places, elbows everywhere, but everyone is really stoked on it” He managed to catch all but one rider, 21 year old Greg Callaghan from Dublin who was exhausted but ecstatic to take the win.
Gee congratulated the winning rider on his stamina and determination “Greg just reeled me in on the final climb – bloody good work.”
